At once a way of living, a philosophical concept
and a traditional aesthetic, wabi-sabi centres
the celebration of imperfection and simplicity,
and is regularly aligned with Zen Buddhism
and the tradition of Japanese tea ceremony.
It can be dated back to the ninth century when
fine powder of green tea was used for the
ceremonial presentation of matcha. Wabi-sabi
celebrates the natural beauty; it prefers the
imperfection to the perfection. “Wabi-sabi
represents the exact opposite of the Western
ideal of great beauty as something monumen-
tal, spectacular and enduring,” says the writer
and architect Leonard Koren. “[It] is not found
in nature at moments of bloom and lushness,
but at moments of inception and subsiding.”
wabi-sabi
Wabi-sabi
Leonard Koren
wabi-sabi
