The 53-year-old Chinese artist Zheng
Chongbin works between Shanghai and
California, where he produces vast, sculptural
ink paintings that are exhibited around
the world. He uses ink as the media to reveal
physicality and phenomenology of the art
by addressing scale and mass. Here he talks
specifically about two paintings that will soon
be displayed in THE PAVILIA HILL .
Francis Bacon
Two of your recent works – "Light of day"
and "Season breeze" – will be displayed in
THE PAVILIA HILL
. Could you introduce
the works?
"Light of day" is a plain use of space. You see
three panels, a sequence, with brushstrokes
that are very straightforward, no big gestures.
I wanted to create a space that is filled with
materials but somehow luminescent, like
a light field. So I let the ink take over. There is
something about it. It feels like something is
emerging, coming from underneath. When you
see the real work, you will notice layers upon
layers of ink and material.
"Season breeze" is one of my vertical pieces,
and I got the inspiration from nature. I actually
let the ink settle on the paper’s surface –
puddles of ink create their own patterns. It’s a
painting that deals with gravity. I let the
material take its own form.
What responses are you hoping the
paintings will elicit from viewers?
I just hope they like the works, that they
see something in them. I hope they can fully
experience them, and I wish the works can
trigger their imagination.
What makes your paintings special?
Usually I don’t enjoy making commissioned
work, but this building is about serenity, the Zen
lifestyle, which makes it exceptional. I had that
in mind when creating the pieces. If you were to
put Francis Bacon’s work up there, the mood
would be completely different. I don’t think
you’d be able to relax.
